1976 Corvette Project Part 41: Assembly the Rolling Chassis
In this video I assemble the rolling chassis. I've got most of the suspension fasteners just barely snug currently until I get more weight on the car and can torque things down.

1976 Corvette Project Part 40: Painting the Frame
Просмотров 2,7 тыс.3 месяца назад
In this video, I show the work done to the 1976 Corvette frame to get it painted. I welded many of the seams where the factory just skip welded and added several gussets on known weak spots. Then I wire wheeled and removed as much of the surface rust I could. I painted it in POR-15 first but it did not adhere properly. So I removed it all and repainted it with epoxy primer and top coated with H...
1976 Corvette Project Part 39: Trailing Arm/Control Arm/Etc. Rebuild

In this video I show the assembly of several suspension components on the 76 Corvette, including ball joints and bushings in the control arm, front spindle/wheel bearing, and assembly of the trailing arms. Note: I realized later that I'd installed the upper ball joints upside down in the control arms. Doh! I have since fixed it.

In this video, I show the disassembly of the trailing arm. You can buy rebuilt trailing arms for the C3 corvettes but they are not cheap. I plan to rebuild mine with a kit I bought containing all the bearings, shims, and spacers. Hopefully I can make a future video on that. A little bit of a shorter video this time. I haven't been filming as much, since it's been a lot of the same type of work, but I've just about finished up the birdcage repairs. I also got my floorpans mostly installed and built a homemade wooden gantry to lift the body off the frame. Great job on those helmets they are really cool! Anyone wanting to work with Chavant or Monster clay it's a good idea to build a heater box to keep your clay warm, I built a small but tall wooden box out of plywood with a wooden door on hinges, mounted a pull chain light socket with a 150 watt bulb, ran the pull chain through a small hole out of the back of the wooden box and lined the entire interior with silver heating duct tape to reflect the heat. It works amazing, close the door and it will melt an entire 5lb tub of Monster clay in 15 minutes but not so hot I can't handle it. If I want the clay a little firmer I open the door and pull or push the tub in or out until I get it right where it's perfect for what I'm sculpting. Also a lazy suzan is a must! Hope this helps someone!

    I used the the Vansteel fibreglass rear spring on my 1970 it’s a lot lighter than the original one. I also used there offset trailing arm so I could fit wider rear tires. For better handling I also used their rear sway bar and their 6 link suspension upgrade. I like your 2 tone colour scheme on your chassis.

      @stephenjolly6906 Месяц назад

      @@xXBocephusXxI find the fibreglass spring superior to the old steel spring giving a quite compliant ride. Trouble with steel leaf springs they rely on the leafs sliding on each other. As they age and corrode they can start to bind giving a noisy and not a smooth operation. When I restored my 1970 C3 I did a number of upgrades including Wilwood brakes, rack and pinion steering, 18” rims with 245 front and 275 rear tires, rear sway bar and 6 link rear suspension. My Corvette apart from the wheels looks like a 70 C3 but drives like a modern car. For me it was a restomod rather than a restoration so build it the way you want. Excellent work and video skills. I grew up in the 80s and c3 corvettes were very common then so much that they didn't have anything really special that often like you are attempting. At my age now I feel they kept the true muscle slash road track car look and appeal going on as the same look over the decades much like the Porsche and Ferrari body style did all those years. It made them icons and fully recognized as what they were by little kids to even old grannies. The bumper cover I made will be fiberglassed directly to the body of the car rather than bolting on like the factory piece did. Good to see you using epoxy and cloth. The part looks plenty good enough. I make molds with epoxy as well because I don't like the extreme smell of polyester and its quick cure time. Thanks. I've used cloth before (mainly 1708 biaxial) but this is my first time using epoxy. I'm liking it so far. I actually like the quick setup time and mix ratio forgiveness of polyester. Plus chopped strand matting is nice to work with when you have complex shapes like this bumper. A respirator is a good idea and helps with the smell. Don't think I've ever heard of any type of gelcoat for epoxy, I know gel is typically polyester based. There could be such a thing though.

I was in Yuma, Arizona for a while with ambient air temperatures over 100° F at midnight. I really struggled with cure times on large parts. I ruined a Corvette dash because it was well into the cure before the layup was finished. Then I worked in Maryland in a climate controlled room that was 70° F all year. That was perfect. Nice. Hopefully some of what I show in the videos helps you a little or is at least mildly entertaining to watch.

    May I ask where you ordered the replacement tail light panel? That would help me alot.

      I bought my tail lamp panel and the lower exhaust valence panel from Zip Corvette. I think the part numbers are F-606 and F-605.
